You are in the DVD warehouse Sci-Fi Films Sci-Fi films have always held a special place in film history, with films like Star Wars and 2001 A Space Odyssey becoming cinematic classics. Sci-Fi films have enthralled us with their dazzling special effects, their diverse characters, their stunning sets and their great action scenes. The DVD medium now allows you to enjoy these films in the best possible quality, as well as giving you the opportunity to go behind the scenes on the extra features. Remember that Tesco.com also has a large selection of TV Sci-Fi Classics available to own on DVD from Star Trek to Farscape Tesco selected... Rib-tickling Comedy Animated Antics Collector's corner Chick Flicks Fantasy Football Fantasy Worlds Star Trek: First Contact Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of the Next Generation crew are back for a second big screen outing. This time their foe are the Borg, who travel back in time to sabotage that pivotal point in Earth’s destiny when we first made contact with an alien race. What else can the crew do except travel back in time and try to sort things out? This Star Trek film is arguably the best of them all, epic in scope, grandiose in emotional sweep, and with fantastic special effects, it is packed with ideas, thrills, in-jokes and some very tense action. Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones The second instalment of George Lucas epic saga is now available to own on video and DVD. Packed with state of the art computer generated imagery this film is vastly superior to Episode One. While the love story may irritate some fans, and the cutting between three plot strands can become slightly confusing, overall this film is true Star Wars. Lucas never loses our attention, it has more action, less politics and better gags than Episode One and the storyline is vastly superior. Ewan McGregor grows more into the role of Obi-Wan, and Hayden Christensen has some good moments as the broody Anakin Skywalker, while Christopher Lee acts the villain again. However the undoubted star of this film is the computer-generated Yoda, who finally lives up to his name as the greatest ever Jedi. A.I. - Artificial Intelligence Steven Spielburg takes on the film Kubrick couldn’t start, and his presence is felt throughout Spielburg’s first attempt at film noir. This is basically the story of Pinocchio, given a daring twist and decked out with fantastic special effects. Haley Joel Osmont (The Sixth Sense) plays the first android child, programmed to love and allocated to a couple whose only son has been cryogenically frozen due to a terminal illness. When the real son recovers the robot boy is left to fend for himself in a brutal world where androids are considered second class citizens. The main problem with the film is that it splits into three parts which don’t seem quite to connect, and Kubrick’s bleakness doesn’t quite mix with Spielburg’s brand of filmmaking. Nonetheless the plot is intriguing and should definitely appeal to any sci-fi fan. 2001: A Space Odyssey Kubrick always said that his intention with this film, was to make something that people would puzzle over for years to come. The plot may be confusing, but the film is still the epitome of sci-fi cinema. Kubrick’s haunting, stylised combination of music and stunning visuals is what ultimately gives 2001 its eerie, mesmerising quality. The attention to detail, and the stunning set pieces also help give this film the must-see status it will always hold in sci-fi and cinema history. Minority Report Steven Spielburg and Tom Cruise join forces in their first collaboration to give us a stunning vision of Philip K. Dick’s short story. Minority Report is set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilise psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crimes. Lt John Anderton (Tom Cruise), the head of the Pre-Crime division of the police, has the tables turned on him when the technology he perfected targets him for the future murder of a man he hasn't even met. He finds himself in a desperate race against time to find the man and stop the crime before it happens. The plot is gripping, and the special effects are superb, with solid acting from Cruise and Colin Farrell. Even more intriguing is the arguments the film raises about the nature of “Pre-Crime” and whether it really works. Stargate In 1928, an ancient Egyptian artefact covered in strange symbols is excavated at the foot of the Great Pyramids. Decades later the American Government recruits the help of Egyptologist Dr Daniel Jackson (James Spader) to decode the secret of these symbols . He reveals the key to a ' stargate ', an intergalactic portal to the far side of the known universe. Jackson is joined by a crack military unit led by Colonel O'Neil (Kurt Russell) on a voyage of discovery. Through the stargate they find themselves in a futuristic desert world ruled by the godlike King Ra. Unwittingly Jackson has reopened a space / time corridor that the ancient Egyptians closed to this despotic ruler centuries ago. The band of explorers can only imagine the power that they have unleashed and the adventure that is about to unfold. Dune David Lynch's massive epic based on Frank Herbert's cult novel features some of the most spectacular sets ever built, and special effects by triple-Oscar-winner Carlo Rambaldi. Planet Dune is 8,000 years in the future and is a world of menace, grandeur and intrigue. Giant mile-long sandworms guard its most precious and priceless asset, the spice mange, which permits travel through time and space. Whoever controls the spice and its secrets controls the Universe. An epic conflict grips the galaxy as Paul Atreides leads his people into combat against the evil Harkonnens for possession of the planet. But, on Dune, Paul discovers that he has an even greater destiny to fulfill. Starship Troopers The Federation needs you for an urgent do-or-die mission in 'Starship Troopers', the ultimate sci-fi action thriller from the director of Total Recall... hailed for its mind-blowing special effects and amazing futuristic settings! The new millennium brings man face to face with the deadliest enemy of all... an intelligent race of alien bugs, some thirty feet tall, some that fly and all capable of destroying every living thing on Earth! That's where brave young freedom fighter Johnny Rico comes in. While Johnny trains in an elite infantry unit, his stunning girlfriend Carmen becomes a top fighter pilot - but is seduced by a suave flight instructor! Join their mission to the aliens' home planet where an all-out intergalactic war is about to begin and with the future of mankind on the line. Epic filmmaking and jarring action sequences that put you in the middle of it all make 'Starship Troopers' the definitive space-age adventure thriller in this or any universe! Become A Citizen ! Titan AE A reluctant young hero holds the key to the future of mankind in the palm of his hand in this eye-popping, sci-fi adventure. Its the year 3028 and the Drej, a vicious alien race, have destroyed Earth. Fifteen years later, a young man named Cale learns he possesses a genetically encoded map to the Titan, a spaceship that holds the secrets to the salvation of the human race. With the Drej in hot pursuit, Cale blasts off with the new crew of the Valkyrie in an attempt to find the Titan before the Drej destroy it... along with mankind's last chance for a home of their own. Featuring an all-star voice cast that includes Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore, and an edgy, out-of-this-world soundtrack, 'Titan AE' is an intergalactic thrill ride for a new generation. Planet of the Apes (2001) In the year 2029, interstellar reconnaissance missions are relegated to chimpanzee pilots from the space station OBERON in deep space. On one such mission, a chimp loses communication and vanishes from the radar. Fearless astronaut Leo Davidson launches a rescue mission and, following a malfunction, lands on a jungle-like planet not unlike the earth. To Leo's astonishment, English-speaking apes and primitive humans inhabit the planet . Following his capture by the apes and subsequent escape, Leo assembles a small band of defiant humans and empathetic apes in an attempt to re-establish contact with OBERON, but his focus changes following an unexpected discovery. Armed with this new information, Leo leads a rebellion against an overpowering ape force that will result in freedom or complete annihilation. Galaxy Quest For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector - 'Commander Peter Quincy Taggart' (Tim Allen), 'Lt. Tawny Madison' (Sigourney Weaver) and 'Dr. Lazaras' (Alan Rickman) - set off on thrilling and often dangerous missions in space...and then their series was cancelled! Now, 20 years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for 'historical documents' and beamed up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives in this hilarious adventure. This film is a great fun spoof of the Star Trek films, but the story is so cleverly executed and the characters so nicely fleshed out that it not only succeeds as a spoof film, but as an original space saga in it’s own right. Men in Black They are the best kept secret in the Universe. Working for a highly-funded yet unofficial government agency, 'K' (Tommy Lee Jones - The Fugitive, JFK) and 'J' (Will Smith - Independence Day, Bad Boys) are the Men In Black, providers of immigration service s and regulators of all things alien on earth. They are your best, last and only line of defense. They work in secret and dress in black...they are the Men In Black - protecting the earth from the scum of the Universe. A huge success at the box office, this film is very funny and successfully uses the chemistry and comedy between the dry Jones, and the inimitable Smith to create one of the best comedies for years. Alien The Crew of a mining ship Nostramo are awoken from hypersleep by a strange signal coming from a nearby planet. Believing the signal to be an SOS Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and crew go to investigate and discover a derelict alien ship and no surviving crew. One of the crew members is attacked by a strange creature but soon recovers and the crew and ship begin their journey home thinking all is well, only to discover that their troubles have only just begun… Close Encounters of the Third Kind A career defining movie for Speilburg and a sci-fi classic about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, an electrical repair man who witnesses a UFO whilst out on a repair job and has the ‘sunburn’ to prove it. Neary becomes obsessed with finding an explanation for this much to the scepticism of his wife and family. The obsession leads him to single mother Jillian (Melinda Dillon) who’s son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (played by French filmmaker Francois Truffaut) who believes that music could be the tool of communication with the aliens. The final scenes of the movie, which include the arrival of the ‘mother ship’ are some of the most memorable in movie history. E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial (20th Anniversary) As 2002 marks the 20th Anniversary since the original release of this movie blockbuster, the film is being re-released (first time on DVD) with new scenes and enhanced visual effects amongst the host of extra features included. Elliott (Henry Thomas) is the detached and sometimes lonely child of single Mum Mary (Dee Wallace) and whilst out in the backyard he senses that something in the woods is watching him. Eventually braving the woods, Elliott discovers an ageing and friendly Alien who has been left behind by a spaceship and doesn’t know how to get home. Whilst Elliott tries to hide the alien and help him to get home, he discovers that the alien can telepathically communicate with him and they try to learn from each other. The race is then on to get E.T. home before the government scientists find him. This is a fantastic film for children and parents alike exploring the innocence of childhood with humour and emotion, whilst using great special effects to create the alien E.T. and the mother ship.
